The History of Steel Pier

Steel Pier opened on June 18, 1898, quickly becoming one of the most famous entertainment destinations in the United States. Built on iron pilings and steel girders, the pier extended nearly half a mile into the Atlantic Ocean and was originally designed as a grand theater venue.

In its early years, the pier survived major challenges, including a destructive storm in 1904 that washed away large sections of the structure. It was rebuilt under the leadership of Edward Bader, who would later become mayor of Atlantic City.

As Atlantic City rose to prominence, Steel Pier grew with it — evolving into a world-class destination that drew visitors from across the country.

The Golden Age of Steel Pier

From the 1920s through the 1950s, Steel Pier reached its peak as a premier entertainment hub. Under owner Frank Gravatt, it featured multiple theaters, a famous “Water Circus,” and major exhibits from companies like General Motors and Ford.

The pier hosted legendary performers including Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, and The Rolling Stones, cementing its reputation as one of the most exciting venues in America.

In 1958, Ricky Nelson performed to a record-breaking crowd of over 44,000 people — so many that the pier was reported to sway under the weight, creating a moment that became part of Atlantic City lore.

Famous Attractions and Performances

Steel Pier became known for its unique and sometimes daring attractions. Perhaps the most famous was the Diving Horse show, where horses and riders leapt from platforms up to 40 feet high into a pool of water below.

Other memorable attractions included the Diving Bell, which lowered visitors beneath the ocean surface, and Rex the Wonder Dog, who famously water-skied behind a speedboat.

These acts helped define the pier’s identity as a place where entertainment pushed boundaries and created unforgettable experiences.

Decline, Fires, and Rebuilding

By the 1960s, Atlantic City began to experience a decline in tourism as travelers found new destinations accessible through air travel. Steel Pier was impacted as well, suffering a major fire in 1969 that shortened the structure significantly.

A second devastating fire in 1982 destroyed much of the original wooden pier, marking the end of an era. However, the story of Steel Pier didn’t end there.

The Modern Steel Pier

Steel Pier was rebuilt in the early 1990s as a modern concrete structure and reopened in 1992. Since 1993, the site has been managed by the Catanoso family, who have played a key role in preserving and revitalizing the pier.

Today, Steel Pier operates as a family-friendly amusement park featuring rides, games, and the iconic 227-foot observation wheel offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Atlantic City skyline.

Many of Atlantic City's top casino resorts are located just steps from Steel Pier, making it a central stop for visitors exploring the Boardwalk.

Ownership and Preservation

Steel Pier is currently owned and operated by the Catanoso family, who purchased the property in 2011 after managing it for nearly two decades. Their commitment has helped preserve the pier’s legacy while modernizing it for future generations.

The pier is led by Anthony Catanoso , President and Principal Owner of Steel Pier Associates, LLC. Under his leadership, the pier continues to evolve, including major renovation and development efforts aimed at strengthening Atlantic City’s resurgence.
