Memorial Day at the Shore — Never Forget What It’s Really About
Hey Folks,
Here we are… Memorial Day Weekend at the Jersey Shore.
The boardwalks are waking up. The beach chairs are out. Families are rolling into Atlantic City, Ocean City, Ventnor, Margate, and Cape May. You can smell the pizza ovens, hear the cover bands warming up, and for a lot of us — this weekend always feels like the true beginning of summer and I love it.
I love seeing people back on the boards. I love the energy. I love hearing live music coming from Resorts Casino Hotel.
Yesterday really felt even with the clouds and drizzling rain it was a GREAT summer kickoff.
Thousands of people packed the Boardwalk in front of Resorts Casino Hotel for the annual Beach Ball Drop and the traditional “Opening of the Sea” ceremony with Resorts Casino Hotel President Mark Giannantonio Mayor Marty Small. There’s just something about watching 5,000 beach balls rain down lol in the rain onto the Atlantic City Boardwalk that screams: summer is finally here.
And before the celebration started, Mayor Small and Atlantic City public safety officials took part in the annual ceremony honoring Memorial Day by symbolically “unlocking” the ocean for the season and placing a wreath into the water in remembrance of those who gave their lives serving this country.
That moment matters.
Because before we get too caught up in the parties, beach badges, cocktails, concerts, and long weekends… we’ve gotta remember something important.
Memorial Day is not about a day off.
It’s about sacrifice.
It’s about the men and women who never made it home.
The families with an empty seat at the table.
The Gold Star mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, sons, daughters, and friends who carry that loss every single day.
I’ve talked to veterans over the years at events, boxing shows, radio remotes, and community gatherings all over South Jersey — and one thing I’ve learned is this:
The freedom we enjoy down here at the Shore came with a price.
So while you’re enjoying the beach this weekend, take a minute Monday at 3 PM for the National Moment of Remembrance. Put the phone down. Look at the flag. Think about somebody who gave everything for this country.
That’s what this weekend is really about.
Now… with that said… there’s also something beautiful about seeing families together, local businesses packed again, and the Shore coming alive for another summer season.
Even with a little unsettled weather in the forecast, it still feels like South Jersey this weekend. We’re looking at cooler temperatures, clouds, and periods of rain Saturday into Sunday, but Memorial Day itself looks a little better with milder temps and breaks in the clouds. Not exactly postcard beach weather — but honestly, sometimes those gray Shore weekends turn into the best memories anyway.
If you know… you know.

And one more thing… support the local businesses this weekend.
The bartenders. The waitresses. The pizza shops. The musicians. The small Shore businesses that grind all winter waiting for these next hundred days.
That’s part of the magic of South Jersey too.
Have fun this weekend.
Be safe.
Take care of each other.
And never forget why Memorial Day exists in the first place.

This is great news with all the events but people must remember all who died for our freedom.
Happy Memorial Day!! Enjoy yourselves 🎉
I REALLY WISH A TRAM WOULD HEAD TO VENTOR. My grandmom had a house there and and also owned what we called a stand/restaurant with just a bar and stools. She made and shucked her own italian water ice , she cooked Italian sausage and pepper in a open windiw for all to watch. It was located at the bottom of the steel pier ramp. The bus stop was located behind it.we need to bring back some iconic things like mr peanut, Taylor porkrollto name a few. GRATEFUL FOR THOSE WHO SACRIFED THERE LIVES. Happy memorial Day everyone!
