Atlantic City Salutes One of Its Finest
Hey Folks,
There are some stories that stay with you long after the cameras leave and the crowd goes home.
Thursday morning was one of those moments.
I was standing outside AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center when Atlantic City Police SWAT Sgt. Christian Ivanov was released from the hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries in the June 2 shooting that shook our city.
Hundreds of officers, first responders, family members, and supporters lined the entrance waiting for him. The moment he came through the doors, the crowd erupted in applause. You could feel the emotion. It wasn’t just a hospital discharge—it felt like a victory for an entire community.
Watching him give a thumbs up while surrounded by fellow officers was something I’ll never forget.
Maybe it hit me a little differently because law enforcement has been a major part of my life, retiring in 2008 after working for the Atlantic County Department of Public Safety / Corrections Facility and now post retirement as a NJSP certified SORA Instructor, friends I’ve spent 40 years plus working in Law Enforcement whether full time and now part time. I’ve spent decades working alongside officers, building friendships throughout Atlantic County and across New Jersey, and serving as an instructor at the Police Academy during my tenure with Atlantic County I’ve gotten to know many of the men and women along with their families who put that uniform on every day.
When you’ve been around the profession that long, you understand the risks that come with the badge. Every officer accepts that reality when they raise their hand and take the oath, but that doesn’t make moments like this any easier.
Coping in the aftermath of an incident such as what accord all the training in the world can not prepare you for situations like what happened on June 2 its a chance we take every day, but when an officer is shot, stabbed, assaulted, or seriously injured in the line of duty, it affects the you and I the community, the officers personal family and the law enforcement sister / brotherhood. That’s why seeing Sgt. Ivanov leave that hospital on a stretcher smiling was so meaningful to everyone gathered there.
For those who may not know the details, Sgt. Ivanov, a father of three and member of the Atlantic City Police Department SWAT Team, was critically injured while serving a warrant alongside Officer Robert Reynolds on North Florida Avenue. Officer Reynolds was also wounded during the incident and was released shortly afterward.
Thankfully, this week brought some much-needed good news.
I’ve always believed Atlantic City / County shows its true character during difficult times. What I witnessed Thursday was proof of that. Officers from multiple agencies from New Jersey and abroad stood shoulder to shoulder. Family members embraced. Friends cheered. Complete strangers stopped to applaud. For a few minutes, everyone was united behind one message: welcome home.
Our thoughts remain with Sgt. Ivanov, Officer Reynolds, their families, and every member of law enforcement who continues to serve and protect our communities.
Special recognition also goes to all ACPD / Chief Sarkos, the incredible doctors, nurses, EMTs, and healthcare professionals at AtlantiCare whose work helped make this day possible.
