One More Big Splash of Summer at Steel Pier
Hey Folks,
You can feel it happening around Atlantic City right now. The calendar is getting ready to turn to September, Labor Day Weekend is coming, and everybody is trying to squeeze a little more Shore time out of summer.
And if you’re looking for a classic Atlantic City way to do it, it’s tough to beat Steel Pier.
I’ve spent enough time on the Atlantic City Boardwalk to tell you this: late August and Labor Day Weekend have their own personality. The crowds are still here, the ocean is still warm, the nights are beautiful, and there’s that little voice in your head saying, “Summer can’t be over already.”
Good news. It’s not over yet.
This Weekend: Rides, Boardwalk Food and Those Ocean Views
Steel Pier is open this weekend with more than 20 rides and attractions stretching 1,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean. You’ve got family rides, thrill rides, games, Boardwalk food and, of course, some of the best views in town.
The current posted hours are 2 PM to midnight Monday through Friday and noon to 1 AM Saturday and Sunday. As always at the Shore, hours can change because of weather or operating conditions, so check Steel Pier’s current operating hours before heading out.
You can see the current offers and ride information on the Steel Pier Tickets & Rides page.
Don’t Forget The Wheel
Here’s something I always tell people: don’t spend the entire visit looking straight ahead.
Look up.
The Wheel at Steel Pier gives you a completely different perspective on Atlantic City. You’ve got the Boardwalk, beach, ocean and skyline all laid out in front of you.
And if you can time your ride around sunset, even better. That’s one of those Atlantic City experiences that’s good whether you’re visiting for the first time or you’ve been coming here your whole life.
A Drink Over the Atlantic?
Steel Pier isn’t just about rides.
The Steel Pier Tiki Bar has been featuring live music throughout the summer, along with drinks and Boardwalk favorites. Head farther out on the Pier and you’ll also find the Sunset Bar and Ocean Reef Bar, where you’re literally sitting over the Atlantic Ocean.
Pizza, funnel cake, ice cream, a cold drink and an ocean breeze. Sometimes we make this whole “things to do in Atlantic City” question way too complicated.
Steel Pier Days Continue for Atlantic City Residents
One program I especially like seeing is the partnership between Steel Pier and the City of Atlantic City that gives local residents opportunities to enjoy the Pier free of charge.
The final Steel Pier Days of the summer are scheduled for 4 PM to 7 PM. Current city event listings include a Third Ward Steel Pier Day on August 31, an All-City Steel Pier Day on September 2, and a Second Ward Steel Pier Day on September 4.
Proof of Atlantic City residency is required, children must be accompanied by an adult, and the All-City event is open to residents citywide. Check the City of Atlantic City’s Steel Pier Days information for program details.
I love programs like this because Steel Pier isn’t simply a tourist attraction. It’s part of Atlantic City’s history and part of the community.
Labor Day Weekend Hours
Steel Pier has also posted its schedule heading into the unofficial final weekend of summer.
- August 31 through September 4: Opens at 4 PM, with closing scheduled for midnight
- Saturday, September 5: Noon to 1 AM
- Sunday, September 6: Noon to 1 AM
- Labor Day, Monday, September 7: Noon to 11 PM
Those hours are subject to change, particularly because of weather, so it’s worth checking the official Steel Pier schedule before making the trip.
What’s Coming Up
- Sunday, August 30 – Steel Pier open noon to 1 AM
- Monday, August 31 – Third Ward Steel Pier Day, 4 PM to 7 PM
- Wednesday, September 2 – All-City Steel Pier Day, 4 PM to 7 PM
- Friday, September 4 – Second Ward Steel Pier Day, 4 PM to 7 PM
- September 5-7 – Labor Day Weekend at Steel Pier
One More Ride Before Summer Says Goodbye
Here’s my suggestion: don’t wait until October and start saying, “We should’ve gone down the Shore one more time.”
Go now.
Walk the Boardwalk. Grab something you’re definitely not going to find on your doctor’s recommended-food list. Take the kids on a ride. Play a game. Catch the sunset. Ride The Wheel. Sit over the ocean for a while and remember why generations of families keep coming back to Atlantic City.
That’s the Shore.
