Atlantic Avenue Is Finally Getting Paved — And Yes, Atlantic City Is Throwing a Party

I was at the Mayor’s Office in Atlantic City for an announcement that a whole lot of residents, business owners and visitors have been waiting a long time to hear: the next major step in paving Atlantic Avenue begins Monday night.

I’ve included the video from the announcement, so you can hear directly from Mayor Marty Small and city officials about what’s happening, when it starts and what drivers should expect.

Monday Night: The Work Begins

According to the City, milling and paving of Atlantic Avenue from Tennessee Avenue to Albany Avenue is scheduled to begin Monday night, September 21. The work will take place overnight during the week, beginning at 8:00 PM.

When I say people have been waiting for this, I’m not exaggerating. If you live here, work here or spend any amount of time driving Atlantic Avenue, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

This comes after months of underground utility work and years of planning and coordination. Earlier this year, the City said the broader Atlantic Avenue Improvement Project also includes synchronized traffic signals, additional lighting, surveillance cameras, pedestrian improvements, high-visibility crosswalks and ADA-compliant ramps.

Pacific Avenue Is Getting Attention Too

Atlantic Avenue isn’t the only major street on the schedule. The City announced that paving on Pacific Avenue from Hartford Avenue to Connecticut Avenue will also begin Monday, with that project divided into three phases. Unlike the overnight Atlantic Avenue work, construction on Pacific Avenue is scheduled to take place during the day. Both projects are expected to be completed by the end of the year, weather permitting.

And there was another piece of news: the City announced it received Federal Highway Administration approval to pave Fairmount Avenue from Missouri Avenue to Winchester Avenue, with that work also expected to be completed before the end of the year. Baltic Avenue from Maine Avenue to Missouri Avenue has already been paved.

That’s a lot of roadwork, and yes, there will be some inconvenience along the way. But anyone who has been asking when these streets would finally get done now has some dates to circle.

Paving & Behavin’ — Only in Atlantic City

Now, you know Atlantic City. We apparently can’t just start paving a road. We have to throw a party first.

Mayor Small is inviting the community to the City’s “Paving & Behavin’ Party” at Florida and Atlantic Avenues on Monday evening. There will be food and music before crews get to work.

What’s Coming Up

• Monday, September 21 at 6:30 PM – “Paving & Behavin’ Party” begins at Florida and Atlantic Avenues.
• 7:45 PM – Remarks from Mayor Small and City officials.
• 8:00 PM – Milling begins on Atlantic Avenue from Florida Avenue to Mississippi Avenue.
• Monday, September 21 – Pacific Avenue paving work also begins, with construction scheduled during daytime hours.

The schedule is weather dependent. The City says lane closures are expected during the road projects, but at this time no full road closures are anticipated. Drivers should also pay close attention to temporary parking restrictions in active construction areas.

A Big Step for Atlantic City

I was glad to be in the room for this announcement because infrastructure isn’t always the flashiest story in Atlantic City, but it matters. These are the streets residents use to get to work, visitors use to get around town and local businesses depend on every day.

There will undoubtedly be some traffic headaches while the work is underway. Give the crews some room, watch the parking signs and give yourself a few extra minutes. The payoff is something Atlantic City has been waiting to see for a long time: newly paved major corridors through the heart of town.
