One Blood Donation Can Change Everything: Atlantic City Shows the Power of Community

Sometimes we all need a reminder that the smallest act of kindness can have the biggest impact. This week, that reminder came from right here in Atlantic City.

More than 70 members of our community rolled up their sleeves at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center to donate blood in honor of Atlantic City Police Sgt. Christian Ivanov. It wasn’t just another blood drive—it was a powerful reminder of what happens when an entire community comes together for one of its own.

A Personal Perspective

Many of you know me from radio, local TV show or social media sharing a positive message or sunrise or reporting in a restorative narrative but before the all that, I wore a badge.

As a former law enforcement officer, I know what it’s like to head to work every day understanding that, despite all the preparation in the world, your life can change in a matter of seconds. You accept that reality when you take the oath, but you never forget it.

The academy then the yearly training, the hours in the classroom, the countless drills, and the constant preparation weren’t just about protecting ourselves those hours spent training but protecting the individual’s involved in the incident both sides, innocent bystander’s and protecting our partners and making sure everyone had the best chance of going home at the end of the shift.

When I heard about this blood drive honoring Sgt. Christian Ivanov, it meant something personal to me.

Back in June, Sgt. Ivanov was critically wounded while serving a warrant in Atlantic City. Doctors say he suffered catastrophic blood loss and was only minutes from death when he arrived at AtlantiCare. The blood already on the shelves—donated by people who had no idea whose life they would someday save—made all the difference.

That’s why this story is so important.

It Takes an Entire Community

This blood drive wasn’t just about supporting one police officer. It was about recognizing the incredible network of people who stand behind every first responder.

It’s the officers working beside you. It’s your spouse and children waiting for you to come home. It’s your friends, neighbors, dispatchers, EMTs, firefighters, nurses, trauma surgeons, hospital staff, and complete strangers willing to donate blood without ever knowing who might receive it.

That’s what I love about South Jersey.

When something happens, people don’t ask whose side they’re on—they simply ask how they can help.

I want to applaud Sgt. Ivanov for his courage, the men and women of the Atlantic City Police Department for the job they do every day, the incredible team at AtlantiCare for the lifesaving care they provide, the American Red Cross for keeping our blood supply available, and every single person who took the time to donate.

A Simple Thank You Goes a Long Way

If you see a correction’s, police officer, firefighter, EMT, paramedic, life guard or any first responder while you’re out and about, take a second to say hello or simply say, “Thank you.”

Trust me, I know what they’re probably going to tell you.

“It’s what I signed up for.”

And they’re right. We do understand the risks that come with the job.

But I can also tell you from personal experience that hearing those words from someone in the community leaves a lasting impression. It reminds first responders that the work they do matters and that the people they serve truly appreciate their commitment.

Sometimes a simple “thank you” means more than you realize.
