The Steel Pier: Where Atlantic City Memories Begin… and New Ones Are Waiting
Hey Folks,
If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you already know how much I love sharing the stories behind the places that make Atlantic City special. There are landmarks that define our city, and then there’s the Steel Pier—not just one of the greatest attractions in Atlantic City, but one of the most famous amusement destinations in America. For more than 125 years, families from around the country have come here to laugh, celebrate, and make memories that last a lifetime. Few places can match the Steel Pier’s history, and even fewer continue creating new memories generation after generation.
I’ve also been fortunate to call Steel Pier President Anthony Catanoso a friend for many years. Anthony isn’t just the guy running one of Atlantic City’s most recognizable attractions—he’s someone who genuinely loves this city and understands the responsibility that comes with preserving one of its greatest treasures. Every time we talk, his passion for Atlantic City and for keeping the Steel Pier thriving is obvious.
A Story I Love Telling on My Boardwalk Tram Tour
If you’ve ever taken one of my AC Mike Boardwalk Tram Tours, you know I always slow down when we reach the Steel Pier. In fact, if you haven’t experienced the tour yet, I’d love to have you join me sometime. It’s one of the best ways to discover the fascinating stories and hidden history that make Atlantic City unlike anywhere else.
When we stop in front of the Steel Pier, I always tell folks this isn’t just another amusement park—it’s one of America’s greatest entertainment landmarks. Long before casinos transformed Atlantic City, this was the place where the biggest names in entertainment came to perform.
One of my favorite stories is about a young singer named Frank Sinatra. Before he became “Ol’ Blue Eyes” and one of the greatest entertainers the world has ever known, Sinatra performed here on the Steel Pier in 1939 with the Harry James Orchestra. Imagine standing where millions of visitors still gather today, knowing one of the greatest careers in music began entertaining crowds right here in Atlantic City.
Then there’s one of the coolest pieces of Atlantic City trivia I get to share on the tour. Most people will tell you The Beatles played the Steel Pier. Well… almost. Steel Pier owner George Hamid booked the Fab Four during the height of Beatlemania in 1964, but the excitement became so overwhelming that the show had to be moved across the Boardwalk to Convention Hall—today’s Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall—because no venue in Atlantic City could handle the demand. The tickets actually read “Steel Pier Presents The Beatles.” That’s the kind of history that makes this place so unique.
Every time I tell those stories, I see people look at the Steel Pier differently. They realize they’re not just looking at rides and games—they’re standing in front of more than a century of American entertainment history.
125 Years of Making Memories
When the Steel Pier opened in 1898, it quickly earned the nickname “The Showplace of the Nation.” Families traveled from across America to experience world-class entertainment, famous orchestras, comedians, spectacular ocean views, and one of the Pier’s most legendary attractions—the famous Diving Horses. For decades, crowds packed the Pier to witness the breathtaking diving exhibitions that became part of Atlantic City folklore. Along with performances by stars like Frank Sinatra and countless other entertainers, the Steel Pier became one of the most recognizable amusement destinations anywhere in the United States.
Today, that tradition continues. While the acts and attractions have evolved over the decades, the mission remains exactly the same—bringing families together to laugh, have fun, and create memories they’ll talk about for years.

Here’s a little insider tip before you go. Don’t make the mistake of calling the Steel Pier’s beautiful Observation Wheel a Ferris wheel. My friend Anthony Catanoso has spent years reminding people there’s a difference—and if you call it a Ferris wheel while he’s around, you just might feel the friendly “wrath” of Anthony! It’s all in good fun, but it’s one of those little Steel Pier traditions that always makes me smile.

It’s where visitors laugh together, conquer their fear on a thrill ride, enjoy the ocean breeze, and watch the sunset over one of the most iconic Boardwalks in America.

So the next time you’re strolling the Atlantic City Boardwalk, don’t just walk past the Steel Pier—walk onto it. Take in the history. Ride the Observation Wheel. Enjoy the ocean views. Make a few memories of your own.

Only since following You on Facebook over the past year or so and reading Your newsletter have I come to appreciate Atlantic City; and the people like You, Anthony Catanoso, and other people who work passionately to promote this special place! I grew up in Jersey and have lived in Arkansas since 1991. My knowledge of AC (prior to following You on Fb) was limited to three visits, a place to gamble, or see shows–not much else. That has all changed! I hope in the future I’ll have opportunity to visit again, and in the meantime say ‘Thank You’ to You and Everyone for all You do for AC–Keep up the great work!
